Brazil's electoral court has given Meta 24 hours to show it is treating President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and rival Flavio Bolsonaro equally on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, escalating a dispute over election-time content moderation days before a tightly contested runoff.
Meta Brazil election court order ahead of runoff
The ruling matters because it puts one of the world's largest social media companies directly in the middle of Brazil's runoff politics, where control of digital reach can shape voter sentiment and campaign momentum. It also raises the risk of fines, tighter platform restrictions and a broader regulatory precedent for how foreign tech groups handle political speech in major elections.
Sentiment Indicators
Lula's campaign accused Meta of suppressing its content to favor Bolsonaro ahead of the Oct. 25 vote. Meta denies taking sides, but has said some Lula campaign ads were incorrectly deactivated because of technical errors that were not limited to Brazil.
The electoral court said Meta had failed to prove compliance with earlier orders and increased the penalty, saying persistent noncompliance with only days left in the race showed the original fine was too low. A judge had already ordered the company to ensure both candidates were subject to the same rules until the second round ends.

The showdown comes as polls point to a close finish after Bolsonaro, the 45-year-old son of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, took the lead in the first round over Lula, who turns 81 next week. For investors, the case adds another layer of regulatory and political risk for Meta in one of Latin America's biggest markets, where platform rules, ad targeting and AI-driven moderation are already under scrutiny.
Meta shares were last around $642.62, down from $762.50 on Oct. 13, leaving the stock well below its 50-day moving average of $663.58 and with an RSI reading of 24.3, a conventional technical indicator that suggests the selloff has pushed it into deeply oversold territory. The company reports third-quarter results after the close on Oct. 22, keeping attention on whether legal and regulatory pressure starts to weigh on execution or sentiment.
