Volodymyr Zelensky is using a softer line on Giorgia Meloni to push a harder message for investors and policymakers: Italy, along with other European economies, is already in Russia’s hybrid-war crosshairs, even as Rome deepens defense ties with Kyiv.

Geopolitical Risk
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, the Ukrainian president praised Meloni as a trusted partner and highlighted cooperation with Italian defense groups, including Leonardo, underscoring how the war is increasingly feeding into Europe’s industrial and security strategy. That matters because it points to a longer runway for defense spending, joint production and technology sharing across the continent, even as Washington’s commitment looks less certain.
Sentiment Indicators
Zelensky said Ukraine is already feeding back battlefield lessons on which Italian and European weapons work best and where they need upgrades, a signal that wartime procurement is becoming a two-way industrial pipeline rather than a simple aid relationship. He also pointed to joint production facilities and Italian jobs, framing the defense partnership as both a security shield and an economic lever for Italy.
The more immediate warning was political. Zelensky said Russia has been conducting a long-running hybrid war against Europe, including Italy, France, Britain and Germany, and accused Moscow of financing propaganda on a scale comparable to weapons spending. He said Russia looks for fault lines in societies — from migration to religion, gender and far-right politics — to weaken democratic decision-making.
For investors, the message is that European defense names and cross-border security contractors remain supported by a geopolitical backdrop that is not easing, even if the front line in Ukraine eventually stabilizes. It also reinforces the case for stronger domestic production capacity in Europe, a theme that has benefited defense suppliers, cybersecurity firms and industrial groups tied to military logistics.
Zelensky’s remarks also deepen the sense of strain in the transatlantic alliance. He said limits on intelligence sharing and slower Starlink service are no longer threats but reality, and called them unfair, while stressing that Ukraine remains open to talks with Donald Trump’s team. That leaves the market focused on two overlapping risks: a possible reset in U.S. support and a broader European push to insulate itself from Russian interference.
The diplomatic backdrop is still fluid, with fresh talk of negotiations and a possible ceasefire, but Zelensky’s comments suggest Europe is preparing for a conflict that will continue to shape procurement, security policy and political risk well beyond any eventual armistice.
