Warsaw has become Europe’s strongest labour market, with the capital region posting an employment rate of 86.9% for people aged 20 to 64, a sign that Poland’s workforce crunch is being driven as much by demographics as by growth.
Warsaw employment rate leads Europe in latest data
That matters for the economy because a shrinking pool of younger workers is making employers more cautious about layoffs and forcing companies to compete harder for staff. It also helps explain why Poland sits among the EU countries with the lowest unemployment, even as ageing accelerates across the region.
Sentiment Indicators
Eurostat’s latest data put Warsaw ahead of Prague at 86.0%, the Åland Islands at 85.5% and Utrecht at 85.4%, while the EU average was 86%. The capital also ranked among the bloc’s leaders in employment for university graduates, at 93.5%, and among the lowest for unemployment among 15- to 29-year-olds, at 7.5%.
Marcin Mrowiec, chief economist at Grant Thornton, told Rzeczpospolita that Poland is Europe’s fastest-ageing society, with retirements removing workers from the labour force faster than younger people are replacing them. That dynamic is increasingly shaping hiring, wages and job security across local labour markets.
For investors, the message is that Poland’s labour market is tight enough to support consumption and limit downside in household incomes, but not so loose as to give companies easy access to labour. That can support sectors tied to domestic demand, while adding pressure on margins in labour-intensive industries and on employers trying to expand capacity.
The data also fits with the broader European picture of uneven labour supply, where demographic change is becoming as important as cyclical demand. The next focus will be whether the tightness in Warsaw and across Poland starts feeding more visibly into wage growth, hiring plans and inflation.
