Walmart Chile says it detected and blocked a wave of fraudulent online purchases on its Lider.cl platform after criminals used stolen card data to place unauthorized orders, exposing a fast-moving checkout risk that can hit e-commerce margins and consumer trust.
Walmart Chile Says It Blocked Fraudulent Online Orders
The supermarket operator, owner of Lider, filed a criminal complaint alleging estafa and computer forgery tied to carding, a scheme in which stolen credit or debit card details are tested and used for online purchases. It said the scheme ran between May 6 and July 11 and caused losses of 79 million pesos, or about $82,000.
Walmart Chile said the attackers made repeated attempts on some orders, in one case using up to eight different cards on a single purchase until one cleared bank verification. The purchases were mainly high-end electronics, a category that is attractive to fraudsters because of higher ticket values and easier resale.
The company said its antifraud system Signifyd flagged the activity and blocked 693 additional transactions in real time, preventing a further 212 million pesos in losses. Walmart Chile said it has already turned to prosecutors and is cooperating with authorities to identify the people behind the attacks.
For investors, the case underscores how online retail growth comes with rising fraud and compliance costs, especially in markets where e-commerce penetration is still expanding. Even when the direct financial hit is modest for a company of Walmart’s scale, repeated fraud can pressure payment processing, raise merchant risk controls and damage customer confidence.
Walmart’s shares have been trading well above both their 50-day and 200-day moving averages, with technical momentum still elevated, but the fraud disclosure adds another operational issue to watch as the retailer expands digital sales. A broader crackdown on online fraud is also gathering pace globally, keeping cybersecurity and transaction monitoring in focus for retailers and payment providers alike.
