Volkswagen Group designers are acknowledging that generative AI could take over parts of their work, a shift that matters because it could lower design costs, speed up vehicle development and reduce the number of people needed in studio teams.
Volkswagen designers say AI may reshape car design
Karl Neuhold, head of exterior design at Skoda, said modern AI tools can turn a rough sketch into multiple polished concepts in seconds, often faster than a designer can render them by hand. He described the technology as the “future” of automotive design and said professionals will need to adapt or risk being left behind.

The comments land at a time when automakers are trying to cut development cycles and squeeze more productivity out of every stage of carmaking. AI is already being used across the industry to convert hand-drawn sketches into 3D images, test aerodynamics in virtual wind tunnels and speed up styling work, with General Motors and Ford among the companies adopting similar tools.
For investors, the bigger implication is that AI is moving from a corporate buzzword to a real operating lever for legacy automakers under margin pressure. If design and engineering workflows become more automated, the payoff could be lower overhead and faster product iteration, but the tradeoff is fewer junior roles and less demand for traditional design labor.
The warning is also part of a wider debate over AI’s effect on white-collar employment. The IMF has said AI could affect up to 40% of jobs globally, and Neuhold’s remarks echo earlier comments from former Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener, who said the profession could be obsolete within a decade.
VW shares and U.S.-listed ADRs have been under pressure this year, with VWAGY recently trading at $7.70, below its 200-day moving average of $9.60 and still well under its 50-day average of $8.51. Mercedes’ U.S.-listed shares, MBGYY, have also slid to $11.43 from $16.95 in early January, reflecting broader investor caution around the European auto sector even as companies push AI into their workflows.
The near-term question is whether AI can boost efficiency fast enough to offset weak sentiment and execution risk at traditional automakers. Any further evidence of AI-driven restructuring, hiring restraint or design efficiency gains will be watched closely as the sector heads toward its next earnings updates and product-cycle milestones.
