Visa has moved its USDC prefunding option for Visa Direct payouts out of testing and into commercial deployment, a small but important step in bringing stablecoins into mainstream payment plumbing.
Visa launches USDC prefunding for Visa Direct
The launch matters because it gives banks, remitters and fintechs another way to pre-fund cross-border payouts without being tied so tightly to traditional banking hours and settlement windows. In practice, Visa is trying to make liquidity management faster and more flexible for businesses that need to send money across time zones and payment rails at near-real-time speed.

Visa said eligible Inyo Global clients can now prefund Visa Direct cross-border transfers with USD Coin rather than relying only on fiat funding windows. Inyo, which processes Visa Direct flows for money transmitters, banks and payment companies, is the first enabler in the rollout. Visa did not disclose transaction volumes, customer names or the markets where the option is live, underscoring that this is still an early commercial phase rather than a broad network-wide launch.
The company is careful to frame the feature as a funding tool, not a recipient-facing crypto payout. That distinction matters for regulators and for mainstream adoption: Visa is keeping the user experience anchored in familiar payout rails while using stablecoins behind the scenes to move liquidity more efficiently. For financial institutions, that could reduce operational friction; for Visa, it opens a new layer of payment infrastructure without forcing a wholesale rewrite of existing workflows.
The move follows Visa’s 2025 experiments with stablecoin prefunding and payout pilots, suggesting the company is now confident enough to promote the model beyond trial status. “The next chapter for stablecoins is adoption,” Visa Direct global head Vira Platonova said, a line that captures the industry’s shift from proof of concept to operational use. That shift is also consistent with a broader payments trend: stablecoins are increasingly being evaluated not as speculative assets but as settlement and treasury tools.
Investors will read the announcement as another sign that Visa is trying to protect and expand its role in cross-border money movement as digital assets seep into mainstream finance. The stock has traded well above its long-term technical support levels, with the 50-day and 200-day moving averages pointing to a strong uptrend, while Coinbase and USDC activity remain in focus across the crypto and payments sectors. The bull case is that Visa can monetize stablecoin infrastructure without sacrificing its core network economics; the bear case is that over time, stablecoin rails could intensify competition in cross-border payments and compress margins.
For now, the economic significance is less about revenue than about control of the rails. If prefunding with USDC becomes a standard liquidity tool for payment companies, Visa could position itself as the bridge between regulated money movement and blockchain-based settlement. The next test is whether other processors and markets follow Inyo into commercial use, and whether Visa eventually discloses enough volume to show the feature is becoming material.
