Vietnamese police have detained an accountant and a cashier at Hoang Nam JSC over allegations they helped create two sets of books to conceal revenue, widening a fraud and accounting case tied to influencer Vũ Hoàng Hải, better known as Hai SAPA TV.
Vietnam Police Detain Hoang Nam Accountants
The move matters because the case goes beyond consumer deception and into alleged tax and financial reporting misconduct, raising the risk of restitution, tax collection losses and tougher scrutiny of small and mid-sized companies that rely on cash sales and loosely controlled books. For investors, it is another reminder that accounting irregularities can quickly become a regulatory and criminal issue in Vietnam, where disclosure standards and internal controls remain a key risk factor.
Lào Cai police said on Oct. 21 that they had charged and arrested Lê Thanh Hiển, born in 1981, and Đỗ Kim Chung, born in 1992, after opening a broader investigation on Aug. 24 into Hải and related individuals and organizations for allegedly deceiving customers and violating accounting rules causing serious consequences.
Investigators said the two accounting staff assisted Phạm Văn Hà, Hoang Nam’s director, in setting up two accounting systems to hide company revenue, harming the state. Police said they are continuing to investigate the roles of other individuals and entities involved.
The case is likely to keep attention on bookkeeping practices, tax compliance and the use of dual ledgers in privately held businesses. Any further arrests or asset recovery efforts could widen the financial and legal fallout for Hoang Nam and related parties.
