Gold prices in Vietnam ended the week with a sharp fall that left recent buyers nursing heavy losses, as both domestic bars and rings tracked weakness in the global market and the international price slipped back below the key $4,200-an-ounce level.
Vietnam gold prices fall as global gold slips
The most important development is not just the weekly decline itself, but the size of the gap between what Vietnamese investors paid and what they can now sell back for. At some major brands, SJC gold bars fell 1.2 million dong per tael in both directions from the previous week to 140.6 million dong for buying and 143.6 million dong for selling, implying a one-week paper loss of 4.2 million dong per tael once the spread is included. That is a steep reversal for a market that had recently been running hot and highlights how quickly momentum can unwind when global prices lose altitude.
Sentiment Indicators
The selloff matters economically because gold in Vietnam is not just a store of value but a widely traded retail asset. When prices swing this violently, it affects household wealth, trading activity and consumer sentiment in a market where many participants buy on short-term price expectations rather than long-term hedging needs. The pullback also narrows the gap between domestic and international prices only modestly, underscoring that local premiums remain elevated and that Vietnamese buyers are still paying a substantial markup for physical bullion.
Global gold set the tone. Spot prices were quoted at $4,165 an ounce at the close of the week, down $29 from the previous week and below the psychologically important $4,200 level. December Comex gold stood at $4,186 an ounce, but the broader message from the market was one of hesitation after a volatile stretch. Technical conditions in gold-related ETFs and miners also showed the strain: the SPDR Gold Shares fund has slipped below its 50-day moving average, while the miners’ ETF has been marked down sharply from recent highs, suggesting that speculative appetite has cooled.
That weakness is feeding through to sentiment. Adalytica’s Gold Fear & Greed Index showed a neutral reading, but with “awareness” in extreme fear territory and a sharp seven-day drop, while survey data showed retail investors nearly split between expecting further gains and further losses. In other words, the market has not collapsed into panic, but conviction has clearly weakened after repeated failures to hold above resistance around $4,200 an ounce.
For investors, the key question is whether this is a pause in a longer bull trend or the start of a deeper correction. The bull case is that gold still sits at historically elevated levels, and persistent macro uncertainty can quickly revive safe-haven demand. The bear case is that after a strong run, gold is vulnerable to profit-taking, especially if the dollar stabilizes or Treasury yields remain firm. That would be particularly painful for leveraged or short-term buyers in Vietnam, who are exposed not only to spot price moves but also to wide dealer spreads.
For now, the message from October 18 is clear: gold’s retreat is hitting Vietnamese buyers hardest, and until the international market reclaims lost ground, the domestic pullback is likely to keep weighing on retail demand and investor confidence.
