Turkey’s September inflation reading due on Oct. 5 is set to determine the first three months of pension increases for SSK and Bağ-Kur retirees, with economist Banu Kıvcı Tokalı forecasting monthly consumer prices will rise 1.98%.
Turkey September CPI Due Oct. 5
That matters because the print will not only shape expectations for the rest of the year’s inflation path, but also lock in the cumulative adjustment used in retirees’ raise calculation. If Tokalı’s estimate proves correct, the three-month inflation rate for SSK and Bağ-Kur pensions would come in at about 5.7%, after a 3.65% two-month rise in July and August.
Sentiment Indicators
The number is being watched closely in a country where inflation remains one of the economy’s biggest policy and political variables. A reading near 2% would leave monthly inflation elevated, but could still reinforce hopes that annual inflation is moving below 30% as last year’s higher price base drops out of the calculation.
The composition of September price pressures points to a mixed picture. Fuel prices rose sharply, with WEB TÜFE data showing an 11.1% monthly increase in gasoline-related costs, a 13.81% jump in diesel and a 13.20% rise in gasoline prices, while the energy group rose 6.55%. Clothing and footwear climbed 4.18% on seasonal changes, and durable goods rose 1.9% as car and appliance prices advanced.
Food, which carries the heaviest weight in the consumer basket, looked more contained. WEB TÜFE data showed food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 2.36% on the month, with meat and processed foods pushing higher even as fresh fruit and vegetable prices continued to ease.
For investors, the inflation release matters because it feeds directly into Turkey’s real-rate outlook, the central bank’s room to maneuver and the lira’s appeal. The Turkish lira was trading at 49.12 per dollar on Oct. 2, with conventional technical indicators showing it well above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, while the RSI remained near 99, underscoring how stretched the currency trend has become.
Turkey’s main stock market is also sensitive to any surprise in inflation, given the backdrop of a bear market and deteriorating sentiment around the macro outlook. In Adalytica’s CPI snapshot, sentiment on the inflation setup is at 95, labeled “Extreme Greed,” reflecting the market’s intense focus ahead of the data rather than confidence in relief.
The next key catalyst is the official Turkish Statistics Institute release on Oct. 5, which will confirm whether September inflation lands close to the 1.98% forecast and how much of retirees’ year-end raise has already been set.
