Thai shares are likely to open and move sideways on Wednesday, with electronics heavyweight DELTA expected to cushion the benchmark while PTT’s ex-dividend date trims the SET by about 3 points and keeps the market from breaking higher.
Thailand SET Likely Flat as DELTA Offsets PTT XD
That matters because Thailand’s benchmark is sitting at a fragile balance point: global risk appetite is still strong enough to lift export-sensitive tech names, but local index mechanics and stubbornly high U.S. bond yields are making it hard for the market to sustain a clean breakout. The near-term trade is less about broad conviction and more about which big-cap names are doing the heavy lifting.
Sentiment Indicators
The setup favors DELTA as the key counterweight. U.S. stocks pushed to fresh highs overnight, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 both closing higher, a tailwind for Thai electronics names that track the AI and semiconductor supply chain. DELTA has already been one of the market’s strongest momentum trades, and its technical backdrop remains firm, with the shares recently holding above both the 50-day and 200-day moving averages. That gives portfolio managers a reason to keep buying dips in the name if they want exposure to the global compute cycle.
By contrast, PTT’s XD adjustment is a mechanical drag on the index rather than a fundamental shock, but it still matters for traders because heavyweight energy names can distort the headline level of the SET. The ex-dividend move will subtract roughly 3 points from the benchmark, enough to mute an otherwise constructive morning and reinforce the view that Thailand’s index is being driven by stock-specific flows rather than a broad economic re-rating.
Foreign money remains the bigger structural risk. Even with U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar showing signs of leveling off, both remain high enough to keep capital flowing toward safer assets. That is a direct headwind for Thai equities, which have already seen foreigners sell more than 2.4 billion baht recently. If yields stay elevated, the market will struggle to attract sustained overseas inflows, especially outside a narrow group of export and theme-driven winners.
For investors, the message is clear: this is still a stock-picker’s market, not a broad index bull run. DELTA is the obvious short-term beneficiary of the U.S. tech rally, while PTT’s XD date is a reminder that large-cap financial engineering can overpower sentiment at the index level. Beyond today, the real catalysts are earnings season, especially banks and AEONTS, and the latest Fed minutes, which will shape the rate outlook and determine whether foreign selling eases.
The opportunity is to stay selective. Ride the momentum in electronics and AI-linked names, but don’t chase the SET as a whole until foreign flows and rates give Thailand a cleaner macro tailwind.
