Crypto treasury companies are using preferred shares to turn volatile token holdings into income products, and the extra yield now being offered by Solana-linked issuer DeFi Development Corp. shows how much funding risk investors want compensated for.
Strategy and DeFi Development preferred yields rise
Strategy Inc., the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, has built a preferred-stock stack that pays roughly 8% to 12%, with its latest variable-rate Stretch preferred at 12% for October. DeFi Development’s CHAD preferred, by contrast, pays 13% on a $10 stated amount, almost double the 6% to 7% cash yield available from staking Solana itself. The gap is the price of admitting that a crypto treasury balance sheet is not the same thing as an income stream.

That distinction matters because both issuers are effectively tapping investors for permanent capital while promising priority payments ahead of common shareholders. In Strategy’s case, the model rests on bitcoin holdings that produce no native yield, so preferred dividends have to be funded through capital raises and, if needed, asset sales. DeFi Development faces a different set of risks: Solana’s sharper price volatility, the need to bridge dividend obligations with future financing, and the added complexity of using DeFi lending platforms such as Kamino and JupLend.
The market backdrop helps explain why these structures are finding an audience. The 10-year Treasury yield has been hovering near 5.9%, while the federal funds rate is still projected around 3.7% in October 2026. Higher baseline rates have lifted the hurdle for every fixed-income alternative, making a 10% to 13% preferred dividend look competitive on the surface even before investors price in crypto risk. But high yields in this corner of the market are not free money; they are a warning label on balance-sheet fragility and token volatility.
For investors, the question is not whether 13% is better than 10%, but what the extra 300 basis points is paying for. In DeFi Development’s case, it compensates for the possibility that Solana’s price weakens, refinancing becomes expensive, or a DeFi credit platform runs into stress. In Strategy’s case, preferred holders are underwriting a bitcoin proxy that has to keep raising capital to support distributions. The common-stock bull case is that these vehicles create a durable retail and income investor base for crypto exposure. The bear case is that the dividend stream depends on favorable markets and repeated access to capital.
The recent share-price action suggests investors are still sorting out that trade-off. Strategy stock has slipped back toward its 50-day moving average after a strong run earlier in the year, while Solana has also cooled from its highs, leaving both issuers exposed to a funding environment that is less forgiving than when crypto prices were rising. If yields across Treasury and credit markets stay elevated, these companies may have to keep paying up to attract capital — and that could eventually test how much income investors are willing to buy from assets that do not naturally generate it.
