U.S. equities are trading near record territory even as gasoline prices and election-year politics tighten the screws on consumers, creating a split-screen for investors between resilient index levels and growing pressure on household spending.
SPY Near Record as Gasoline Pressures Consumers
That tension matters because fuel is one of the few expenses consumers notice immediately, and when gasoline costs climb, the impact runs through discretionary spending, inflation expectations and campaign rhetoric. The S&P 500, tracked by SPY, closed at 778.57 on Oct. 9, just below its recent highs and above both its 50-day moving average of 766.28 and 200-day moving average of 719.66, suggesting the broader market still has momentum despite rising political noise. But the technical picture also looks stretched: the relative strength index at 55.6 is not overbought on its own, yet it follows a sharp advance from a March low of 645.30, leaving the index vulnerable if consumer spending softens.
Sentiment Indicators
For investors, the key issue is not whether stocks are still rising, but whether the gains can hold if energy costs continue to erode real incomes ahead of the 2026 midterm cycle. Higher gasoline prices tend to act like a tax on consumers, especially lower- and middle-income households, and that can hit retailers, restaurants, travel names and other discretionary winners before it shows up in earnings estimates. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund, XLP, has held up better than cyclical peers, closing at 83.43 on Oct. 9 and sitting above its 200-day moving average of 82.81, a sign that investors are still leaning toward defensives as they assess the durability of consumption.
The divergence between SPY and XLY underscores that point. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ended at 112.85, below its 50-day moving average of 114.23 and 200-day average of 115.67, indicating that investors are already demanding a discount for consumer-spending risk. That relative weakness matters in a year when campaign messaging around affordability, energy policy and economic competence can quickly spill into markets. Republicans are likely to press the case that higher fuel costs reflect policy failure, while Democrats will try to frame any relief as evidence of stabilization; either way, gasoline becomes a political shorthand for the broader cost-of-living debate.
Adalytica’s S&P 500 trade signals show sentiment at 87, labeled extreme greed, while awareness remains at 25 and labeled fear, a combination that suggests markets are complacent even as macro and political crosscurrents build. The U.S. dollar signal is also firmer, with sentiment at 75 and greed territory, which can add pressure on commodity prices and multinationals but may also keep imported inflation contained if the dollar strength persists.
The bull case is that the consumer can absorb higher fuel bills if wage growth and employment remain steady, allowing the market’s upward trend to continue into the election season. The bear case is that gasoline-driven anxiety bleeds into sentiment, trims discretionary demand and forces investors to rotate further into staples, utilities and other defensives.
For now, the market is pricing growth over politics. But if fuel costs stay elevated into the 2026 midterm campaign, investors may find that the most important market risk is not Washington gridlock itself, but the way it changes the behavior of American consumers.
