A recruitment day in Sarlat is putting a spotlight on a bigger labor-market problem: employers say many job seekers still do not know there are vacancies close to home, and local companies are trying to fix that by meeting candidates face to face.
Sarlat Job Fair Highlights Local Hiring Gaps

On Thursday, Oct. 15, businesses in the Sarladais opened their doors to job seekers, high school students and university students to showcase their trades as part of the third Rallye des pépites, a local hiring event organized by Medef Périgord and state services. About 200 people took part, underlining both the demand for work and the effort needed to connect employers with candidates in a region where recruitment remains a practical, not just a statistical, challenge.
The event reflects a broader economic issue across France and other labor markets: unemployment can coexist with unfilled vacancies when employers struggle to reach the right workers, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. By bringing candidates onsite, the organizers are trying to lower one of the main barriers to hiring — visibility — and broaden the pool beyond formal applications alone.
That matters for employers because labor shortages can restrain output, delay expansion and raise hiring costs. It also matters for workers, especially the long-term unemployed, students and first-time entrants, because direct contact with local businesses can turn abstract job openings into concrete opportunities.
The Rallye des pépites has now rotated from Périgueux to Terrasson to Sarlat, with Bergerac next year, showing the format is becoming a regional tool for matching supply with demand. In Sarlat, the message is simple: jobs exist nearby, but employers still have to go out and find the people.
The next test is whether the initiative converts curiosity into contracts, and whether more local businesses join future editions as hiring remains tight.
