Pedro Sánchez’s Socialists are turning Javier Milei’s insults into campaign fuel, betting the Argentine president’s attack on Spain’s prime minister will help them re-energize left-leaning voters before the November 29 general election.
PSOE uses Milei attack in Spain election campaign
The move matters because the PSOE is still struggling to set the agenda on bread-and-butter issues such as housing and pensions, while Sánchez’s wear-and-tear in office has dulled the party’s message. Milei’s appearance in Madrid gives the Socialists a clean ideological target and a simple frame: defend democratic institutions against an outsider they can cast as an ally of the Spanish right.
Sentiment Indicators
Ferraz, the PSOE headquarters, moved fast. The party unfurled a large banner at its Madrid headquarters welcoming “the lefties” to Spain, while Sánchez posted a video online embracing his own left-wing label and listing social policies from his time in office. The message is designed less to win over conservatives than to motivate disillusioned progressives to vote.
That is a familiar playbook. In Spain’s July 2023 election, the Socialists successfully leaned on fears of a PP-Vox alliance to consolidate the progressive vote and keep Sánchez in power even after the conservatives won the most votes. This time, Milei offers a new face for an old strategy, one that allows the PSOE to shift the debate away from governing fatigue and toward ideology and political identity.
The risk for Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s Popular Party is that Milei’s proximity to Vox, and his praise for figures such as Santiago Abascal and Isabel Díaz Ayuso, could pull the opposition into the frame whether it wants it or not. Foreign minister José Manuel Albares has already condemned Milei’s remarks as attacks on Spain and its institutions, raising the diplomatic temperature and reinforcing the government’s message of national defense.
For investors, the story is a reminder that Spanish politics remains highly sensitive to coalition math and turnout dynamics rather than any immediate market shock. The key question now is whether Milei’s intervention helps Sánchez regain momentum or whether economic concerns still dominate voters’ minds as the campaign enters its final stretch.
