Inflation in Ourense rose to 5.6% in September, the highest level in more than three and a half years, as higher utility bills, fuel costs and housing-related charges pushed the province well above Spain’s 4.9% national rate.
Ourense Inflation Reaches 5.6% in September
Long-term Inflation Expectations
The latest reading matters because it shows the cost-of-living squeeze is broadening beyond food and into the fixed expenses that hit households and small businesses hardest. Ourense is now the fifth-most inflationary province in Spain, tied with A Coruña, Cuenca and León and only behind Burgos, Ciudad Real, Badajoz and Toledo.
Sentiment Indicators
The biggest driver is water and housing-related fees, which surged 32.7% from a year earlier after the city of Ourense scrapped long-frozen tariffs and raised charges for households and companies. Energy is the other pressure point: electricity, gas and home fuels are up 18.3% from a year ago, while transport costs have climbed 16.6%.
Food is still rising, but at a much slower pace. Food and non-alcoholic beverages increased 3.2% over the year, giving families some relief compared with the spike in utilities, energy and mobility costs.
The jump in fuel prices is also forcing policy response at the national level. Spain’s government has extended the 20-cent-per-liter fuel discount through November after diesel and gasoline prices soared well above the threshold that was supposed to trigger a rollback of emergency support.
For investors, the report is another sign that inflationary pressure remains sticky in parts of Europe, especially where energy and regulated prices are still resetting. That can keep consumer demand under pressure, complicate the backdrop for retailers and utilities, and reinforce expectations that policymakers will stay cautious on easing.
