Japan’s Nikkei rebounded 0.61% on Wednesday as chip-linked shares such as Advantest and Tokyo Electron recovered from the prior session’s sharp selloff, helping offset weakness in banks and keep the benchmark in positive territory.
Nikkei Rebounds as Advantest, Tokyo Electron Rise
The index rose to 68,193.13 at the midday break after falling 1.8% on the previous day, while the broader Topix was little changed, down 0.05% at 4,108.8. The move highlights how heavily Japan’s equity market is still leaning on semiconductors, with gains in the sector often doing the work of the rest of the market.
Sentiment Indicators
Advantest climbed 1.19% and Tokyo Electron added 0.78%, while SoftBank Group rose 2.15%, giving the Nikkei a lift even as financials dragged on the wider market. The split underscores a familiar pattern in Tokyo: chip exposure can steer the benchmark even when domestically sensitive sectors are under pressure.
For investors, the rebound matters because Japan’s market has become a proxy for the global semiconductor cycle, and recent volatility has shown how quickly that trade can reverse. The latest move also comes as Asian chip stocks remain sensitive to worries about Chinese memory makers, the durability of AI-driven demand and whether the industry’s rally can extend after a strong run.
ASML’s stronger 2026 revenue outlook and record third-quarter sales have helped reinforce the case for AI-related chip spending, but the broader sector is still prone to sharp swings. Traders will be watching whether the Nikkei can hold above recent levels if semiconductor momentum persists and whether banks and other domestically oriented stocks can start to stabilize.
