Italy’s Treasury drew another 2.88 billion euros of orders for its BTp Value retail bond on the second day of the sale, taking total demand across the two tranches to 8.58 billion euros even as global sovereign borrowing costs stay elevated.
Italy Treasury BTp Value orders reach 8.58 billion
The latest take-up matters because it shows Italian households are still willing to lock into government debt at a time when rising U.S. Treasury yields, a stronger dollar and jittery risk appetite have unsettled fixed-income markets. For Rome, strong retail participation helps diversify funding away from institutional buyers and supports the Treasury’s ability to place debt without leaning solely on volatile wholesale demand.
Sentiment Indicators
The traditional BTp Value, which pays step-up coupons, accounted for 2.885 billion euros and more than 92,000 contracts, while the BTp Value Insieme, which offers a maxi-coupon and principal repayment without periodic coupons, attracted 1.095 billion euros from more than 41,000 subscribers. In total, the first two days generated 6.28 billion euros for the standard issue and 2.275 billion euros for the “Insieme” bond.
The result is a sign that Italy’s retail savings channel remains a useful funding tool even as investors worldwide reassess sovereign risk and duration exposure. The Treasury is keeping the offer open until 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, unless it closes early.
For investors, the key question is whether the placement finishes with enough momentum to reinforce demand for Italian debt at a time when benchmark sovereign yields remain under pressure. A strong final tally would be supportive for Italy’s near-term financing outlook, while any slowdown would underscore how much the market has changed as bond volatility rises.
