India’s services sector expanded at its fastest pace in three months in September, but the broader picture was less reassuring: activity over the July-September quarter was the weakest since early 2022, underscoring how uneven the recovery remains even as domestic demand holds up.
India Services PMI Rises to 55.2 in September
The HSBC India services PMI rose to 55.2 from 54.1 in August, above the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction, but still below the preliminary 55.8 reading. The monthly improvement was driven mainly by stronger domestic orders, with new business rising at the quickest pace since June. That matters because services are a major engine of India’s economy and a key barometer of household and corporate spending.
Sentiment Indicators
The stronger September print was not enough to offset the softer quarterly trend. The average PMI for July through September fell to its lowest level since the quarter ended March 2022, suggesting momentum is cooling beneath the headline growth rate. Export demand was notably weaker: new export orders slowed to the weakest pace in nearly three years, indicating that India’s services recovery is leaning more heavily on local demand than on an external upswing.
That distinction matters for investors because a domestically driven expansion is more durable than a cycle dependent on global trade, but it can also be less broad-based. The data showed hiring growth slowing from August, a sign firms remain cautious about adding capacity. Input-cost inflation eased to a 10-month low, which should relieve some pressure on margins, while companies raised prices at the slowest pace since June, suggesting firms may be reluctant to pass on costs aggressively in a competitive demand environment.
Business confidence improved to a three-month high, but it remained historically subdued, with only about 16% of firms expecting activity to rise over the next year. That weak forward-looking sentiment tempers the case for a sharp reacceleration, even as September’s data point to a steadier near-term backdrop.
The services reading also fit with a firmer manufacturing picture. The composite PMI rose to 55.9, a three-month high, after manufacturing growth accelerated to its fastest since February. Together, the numbers point to an economy that is still expanding at a healthy pace, but one where the strongest quarter of the year may be behind it.
For markets, the message is mixed. The data support the view that India remains one of the faster-growing major economies, but they also suggest the latest burst of momentum is not yet translating into stronger exports or a broad labor-market upswing. Investors will be watching whether domestic demand can keep carrying the cycle into the final quarter, and whether easing cost pressures can offset the loss of export traction.
