GameStop’s stock is surging after the video-game retailer said it plans to enter the NFT marketplace, a move that could open a new digital revenue stream even as its core stores continue to shrink.
GameStop Plans NFT Marketplace Entry

For investors, the appeal is obvious: GameStop is trying to turn brand recognition and a devoted gamer base into something more durable than physical game sales. In a retail business under pressure, the promise of fees, transactions and recurring digital engagement can matter more than another quarter of weak store traffic.
The company’s latest filing makes clear that management is looking beyond old-fashioned storefront economics. GameStop says its strategy now has two pillars: capital allocation and finding businesses or partnerships that can create long-term value. That is a meaningful shift for a company once defined almost entirely by selling discs, accessories and collectibles in malls.
Still, the bullish case depends on execution. NFT marketplaces are crowded, volatile and heavily exposed to shifts in crypto sentiment. The idea of selling virtual game goods such as character outfits and weapons has clear logic for gamers, but logic does not always translate into scale. Investors have seen plenty of NFT-adjacent businesses attract attention before struggling to build lasting revenue.
That tension is what makes the stock move so important. When a legacy retailer can command a sharp rally on a digital initiative, it shows how strongly markets are rewarding optionality in companies with strong cash and a recognized brand. It also shows how little patience investors have for businesses that rely only on fading physical retail trends.
GameStop shares were recently trading at $23.83, well above the 50-day moving average of $20.14 and just over the 200-day moving average of $22.19, with the relative strength index near 90, a sign the stock has become technically stretched after the jump. In other words, enthusiasm is running ahead of fundamentals, which is often exactly what happens when speculation takes hold.
For long-term investors, the real question is not whether GameStop can get headlines from an NFT marketplace. It is whether the company can build a repeatable digital business that compounds over years, not weeks. Until that becomes clear, the stock remains a speculative bet on transformation rather than a proven investment thesis.
