A Fortuneo Gold CB Mastercard can be free if customers make just one card payment a month, a small requirement that can save as much as 108 euros a year and underscores how fiercely online banks are competing on fees.
Fortuneo Gold CB Mastercard Free With One Monthly Payment
That matters because the story is no longer just about a promotional perk. It is about the economics of digital banking in Europe, where low-cost distribution, app-based account opening and minimal branch overhead allow lenders to offer premium-feeling products at little or no annual charge. For consumers, that turns a so-called high-end card into a practical everyday tool rather than a status symbol. For investors, it highlights a broader trend: banks and payment groups are using fee waivers, welcome bonuses and bundled services to win primary accounts and keep customers engaged.
Sentiment Indicators
Fortuneo, a French online bank, says the Gold card works on the CB network in France and Mastercard abroad, can be opened entirely online and comes with immediate virtual access before the physical card arrives. The bank also points to extras such as cheque deposits, instant transfers and a checking account that can be opened without charge. In other words, the real product is not just a card — it is a low-friction banking relationship built around recurring customer use.
The saving is straightforward. Without at least one monthly payment, Fortuneo says it charges 9 euros a month for the Gold card, which adds up to 108 euros over a year. Meeting the usage condition effectively wipes out that fee. The same account opening can also come with bonuses of as much as 260 euros if customers use the FTN1026 code and complete the required activity, including five payments in 90 days, the neoChange transfer service and opening a Livret+ savings account. Fortuneo says customers must keep the account and card for at least a year to receive the full rewards.
For long-term investors, the larger takeaway is that fee-free or low-fee banking is becoming a competitive necessity, not a gimmick. Online banks can afford aggressive pricing because they do not carry the same branch costs as traditional lenders, and that puts pressure on incumbents to either match discounts or justify higher fees with richer services. In payments, too, the battle is about staying top of wallet: if customers are using the card monthly, the issuer keeps the relationship alive and the network keeps the transactions flowing.
The risk for consumers is simple: these offers are only valuable if you actually use the account and understand the conditions. But for patient savers and fee-conscious households, the message is encouraging. If you are already willing to move your banking online, the cheapest premium card is often the one that asks you to use it once a month. That is worth watching, and for many households it is worth taking advantage of.
