Egypt’s iron prices are sitting at elevated levels just as major steelmakers prepare to lift prices again, a reminder that construction costs are still being pushed higher by imported raw materials, a firm dollar and cost inflation across the steel chain.
Egypt steel prices rise as producers lift quotes
For builders, contractors and homeowners, the key issue is not just the sticker price of a ton of steel, but the direction of the market. In October’s published price lists, Ezz Steel quoted 40,850 Egyptian pounds a ton for long products at the factory gate, while some rivals started as low as 35,700 pounds. That 5,150-pound gap per ton becomes meaningful fast: a 10-ton purchase can swing by 51,500 pounds before transport, delivery charges and specification differences.

That spread matters economically because steel is one of the biggest inputs in Egypt’s housing and infrastructure spending. When rebar costs rise, the impact shows up almost immediately in project budgets, especially for private builders who cannot easily hedge or delay purchases. It also feeds into broader inflation pressure, since higher construction costs tend to filter through to housing, contracting and related services.
The pricing picture suggests producers are still able to pass on some of their own cost burden. Ezz Steel and Suez Steel have announced increases of 1,200 pounds per ton starting Oct. 25, citing a stronger dollar and rising production costs. That lines up with a broader commodity backdrop in which iron ore has softened only modestly, while steelmakers remain under pressure from expensive inputs and currency moves.
The global angle matters too. U.S. steel names have been dealing with their own cost squeeze: Nucor said steel input costs weighed on margins in the second quarter, while Steel Dynamics reported its metallic raw material cost per net ton consumed rose $23, or 6%, in the third quarter. In other words, Egypt is not alone; this is a wider steel cycle where producers are trying to defend margins while buyers are trying to control capital spending.
For investors, the story is about who can preserve pricing power. Producers with strong brands, distribution networks and better cost control are usually better positioned than smaller mills when raw material prices and exchange rates turn volatile. For construction-linked businesses, though, higher steel prices can delay projects, squeeze margins and cap demand if affordability worsens.
The long-term takeaway is simple: iron and steel prices in Egypt remain a live cost issue, not a one-day headline. If you are a builder, compare quotes carefully and check the final delivered price. If you are an investor, keep an eye on steelmakers that can raise prices without losing volume, because those are the companies most likely to turn cost inflation into durable cash flow. That makes the sector worth watching, not for a quick trade, but for how well it compounds through the cycle.
