Gold prices in Egypt are diverging from the global rally because local demand is soft enough that dealers are cutting the dollar rate used to price bullion, leaving 21-carat gold trading below its fair value even as the international price holds near a one-week high.
Egypt Gold Prices Lag Global Rally on Weak Demand
That disconnect matters because Egypt’s gold market is not just following London — it is being shaped by household buying power, dealer inventory risk and the local currency benchmark. On Saturday, 21-carat gold was unchanged at 6,140 Egyptian pounds a gram after rising about 40 pounds on Friday, while 24-carat gold stood at 7,020 pounds and the gold pound at 50,320 pounds.
Sentiment Indicators
Globally, gold climbed about 1.5% on Friday to as high as $4,207 an ounce, then hovered near $4,185 as traders bet on softer U.S. dollar performance and lower Treasury yields. The metal is still pressing against the $4,200 level, while the $4,100 area has acted as support, according to local market analysis cited by Gold Bullion, making the next move in U.S. data and Federal Reserve expectations the key driver for the international price.
For Egyptian investors and jewelry buyers, the bigger story is the domestic discount. Gold Bullion said the local market is trading below fair value because weak demand is forcing merchants to lower the exchange rate assumption embedded in retail pricing, muting the impact of the firmer global benchmark.
The Egyptian pound was quoted around 52.50 to the dollar during the weekend banking holiday, keeping the currency effect relatively stable for now. But the local market remains vulnerable to any shift in demand, the exchange rate and the next move in the global ounce price, which will determine whether Egypt’s bullion prices catch up with the world market or stay capped by sluggish buying.
