A month without rain in Ecuador’s Napo province is putting about 1,000 hectares of corn at risk, threatening to wipe out 60% to 70% of output and squeeze income for 600 farming families while also tightening supply for livestock feed makers in other provinces.
Ecuador Napo Corn Crop Faces Drought Losses
The immediate economic issue is not just a local crop loss. Napo corn feeds balance-sheet factories in Tungurahua, Carchi and Pichincha, so a reduced harvest would ripple through the feed chain that supports poultry and hog production. In a country where maize is a core input rather than a niche crop, lower output can translate into higher procurement costs for processors, tighter margins for animal producers and, eventually, upward pressure on food prices.
Farmers in Chonta Punta and Ahuano, in the canton of Tena, say rising temperatures as high as 38 degrees, persistent soil dryness and plagues are stunting development across fields. Plants in some plots are only 15 to 50 centimeters tall, far short of what is needed to secure a viable harvest. In normal conditions, one hectare yields at least 140 quintals of corn, but the drought and pest damage now threaten a large share of that crop before it reaches maturity.
The damage is being compounded by plant disease. Farmers cited “mancha de asfalto,” a fungal infection that darkens leaves and can cause them to dry out, alongside insects that attack both the plant and its roots. Esther Grefa, one of the growers in the area, said fungus is affecting the ear of corn while the fall armyworm is drying out the plant, leaving very little production. That combination matters economically because drought-stressed crops are more vulnerable to infestations, making yield losses more likely even if rains return later.
Authorities and agronomists are providing technical assistance, including fungicides and insecticides, and farmers say they are rotating treatments to avoid resistance. But that does not solve the central problem: without water, chemical controls can only slow the deterioration. From an investor and market perspective, this is the key risk in agricultural shocks — the loss is not simply one season’s volume, but a forced reset in input spending, working capital and future planting decisions for smallholders.
The broader implication is for Ecuador’s agricultural supply chain. If the expected 60% to 70% loss is realized, the hit to household income in Napo would be severe, while feed manufacturers in other provinces may have to source more grain elsewhere, likely at higher cost. That kind of localized weather shock can feed into wider inflation pressures in food and animal protein markets, especially when inventories are already tight.
For now, the main catalyst is rainfall. A meaningful recovery in precipitation would ease stress on the crop and limit the downside to harvest volumes. If dry conditions persist, however, the losses could become structural for this season, shifting the burden from farmers to processors, livestock producers and consumers.
| Entity | Gains | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| Napo farmers | ▲Higher crop survival if rains return | ▼Income loss from yield collapse |
| Feed factories in Tungurahua, Carchi and Pichincha | ▲Stable local supply if harvest recovers | ▼Higher grain costs and tighter supply |
| Poultry and hog producers | ▲Lower input costs if maize supply normalizes | ▼Margins squeezed by pricier feed |
| Consumers | ▲Price stability if production rebounds | ▼Higher food prices if corn supply tightens |
