Rice growers in the Dominican Republic blocked both directions of the Juan Pablo II highway on Sunday, escalating a fight over imports they say are undercutting local harvests, pressuring prices and threatening farm income.
Dominican Republic rice growers block highway over imports
The protest snarled traffic between the Guaraguao toll plaza and the Morenillo junction and underscores how sensitive the rice market has become as producers push for tighter trade controls. For investors and policymakers, the dispute matters because rice is a staple food and a politically charged crop: any prolonged import disruption or policy reversal can ripple through domestic prices, mill margins and food inflation.

Farmers argue a surge in imported rice is making it harder to sell the national crop, while also squeezing demand for locally grown grain. They say foreign supply, particularly from the United States, is benefiting from subsidies that leave Dominican producers at a competitive disadvantage.
The confrontation has widened beyond the road blockade. The Movimiento Popular Dominicano backed the farmers and criticized the government’s trade stance, including the repeal of Decree 693-24, which had provided safeguards and tariff mechanisms to shield domestic rice producers during the phased rollback of DR-CAFTA protections.
The standoff comes as the rice market remains fragile and prices have shown recent tension, reflecting uncertainty around import policy and local supply. That makes government action the key near-term catalyst: if officials tighten import controls, domestic producers could gain relief, but consumers and traders could face higher prices and more volatility.
