The DAX shook off an early selloff on Tuesday and climbed to a four-week high, showing investors are still willing to buy German equities when earnings momentum outweighs macro nerves. For long-term investors, that matters because it suggests the market is rewarding companies with credible profit growth even as broader sentiment stays fragile.
DAX Rebounds to Four-Week High on Adidas Strength
At one point the benchmark fell more than 270 points, with energy shares leading the weakness and pushing traders into a defensive mood. But the index recovered much of that drop by midday, helped by a brighter outlook from Adidas and strength in select names including OHB, while the DAX finished the session just below its recent peaks. The move is important because Germany’s flagship index is still trading near the 25,600 area, close to the 50-day moving average and above the 200-day moving average, a sign that the longer-term trend remains intact even if momentum has not fully reset.
Sentiment Indicators
That combination of resilience and hesitation is exactly what investors should watch. The DAX has been whipsawed by swings in global risk appetite, and the latest session showed how quickly sector-specific weakness can drag on the broader market. But it also showed that buyers are ready to step in when a company offers a better earnings story. Adidas matters here because upbeat guidance can do more than lift one stock; in a market like this, it can help reset expectations for German corporates more broadly.
The contrasting moves in the DAX and U.S.-listed German ETF EWG tell a similar story. EWG has been stabilizing after its own pullback, with momentum indicators improving and its price back near the middle of its recent range. Deutsche Bank, meanwhile, remains under pressure, underscoring how uneven the recovery is beneath the headline index. That gap matters for investors because it points to a market where stock selection may matter more than simple exposure to Germany as a whole.
There is also a broader macro layer underneath the tape action. European trade signals around the euro remain neutral, while U.S. market sentiment is in extreme fear territory, a reminder that German stocks are not trading in isolation. If global growth concerns ease and earnings revisions keep trending higher, the DAX has room to build on this rebound. If energy weakness and cautious risk appetite persist, the rally will likely remain choppy.
For investors thinking in years rather than days, the message is straightforward: Germany is still a market where strong franchises can outperform even in a nervy backdrop. The near-term path may be volatile, but the DAX’s ability to recover from an early slump and revisit a four-week high is worth watching, especially for those looking for earnings-driven opportunities rather than trying to time every swing.
