Croatia’s latest crop forecast shows a widening split in its farm economy: corn, soybeans and sugar beets are all heading for lower output in 2026, while sunflowers are the only major crop set to expand.
Croatia Crop Forecast Cuts Corn Soybean Sugar Beet Output
That matters because the country’s grain and oilseed harvest is a quiet but important pillar of rural incomes, feed supply and food processing. When corn and soy production fall at the same time, the pressure runs through livestock producers, crushers, ethanol and broader agri-food prices. A stronger sunflower crop helps, but it does not fully offset the drop in the bigger staple crops.
Sentiment Indicators
The Croatian Bureau of Statistics said corn production should fall 8.6% from 2025 to 1.5 million tonnes, with average yields slipping to 5.9 tonnes per hectare from 6.4 tonnes. Soybean output is expected to drop 28.8% to 141,000 tonnes, while sugar beet production is seen tumbling 26.1% to 300,000 tonnes. Sugar beet yields are forecast at 40 tonnes per hectare, down sharply from 57 tonnes a year earlier.
Sunflowers are the exception. Production is projected to rise 20.3% to 243,000 tonnes even though yields edge down slightly to 2.9 tonnes per hectare from 3 tonnes. For investors, that is a reminder that weather and planting decisions can quickly reshape the value of different crop markets, even inside one country.
The broader backdrop is not friendly to corn. Crop data across Europe have been pointing to tighter supply, and the latest Croatian numbers fit that pattern. For farmers, lower yields mean weaker revenue unless prices rise enough to compensate. For processors and buyers, it means a less comfortable cost environment and potentially more reliance on imports.
The long-term lesson for investors is simple: agricultural supply is cyclical, but the best-run businesses in the space tend to win by owning diversified exposure to crops, regions and pricing power. Croatia’s harvest mix is shifting again, and that makes sunflowers worth watching — but corn and soy losses still dominate the economic story.
