Colombians are feeling the squeeze from faster inflation again, with consumer prices rising to 6.29% in September and pushing the cost-of-living debate back to the center of the economy.
Colombia inflation rises to 6.29% in September
The latest reading matters because it keeps inflation well above the central bank’s target and risks delaying any meaningful easing in borrowing costs. It also feeds through quickly to household budgets in a country where food and education prices are doing much of the damage, and where weaker currency conditions are making imported goods more expensive.
Sentiment Indicators
The inflation pickup comes as the Colombian peso has been under pressure, with the dollar reaching as high as 3,244 pesos on strong demand for foreign currency. That combination is especially painful for consumers and businesses: a weaker peso lifts the local cost of imports, while sticky prices at home reduce real incomes and complicate corporate planning.
Producer prices have also moved back into positive territory, suggesting cost pressures are not limited to retail shelves. That increases the chance firms will pass higher input costs to consumers, keeping inflation elevated into year-end and reinforcing expectations that the 2026 inflation rate could end near 7%.
The outlook matters for policy and wages as much as for prices. Economists are already pointing to a minimum wage increase of about 148,827 pesos for 2027, a sign that inflation expectations are becoming embedded in pay negotiations and could keep domestic costs elevated even if demand cools.
For investors, the immediate risk is a more cautious central bank and a harder path back to lower rates. That is a headwind for local bonds, consumers, and rate-sensitive sectors, while supporting dollar demand and keeping pressure on the peso unless inflation starts to decelerate decisively in coming months.
