Oil and gas will continue to dominate Azerbaijan’s economy, President Ilham Aliyev said at the 2nd Azerbaijan International Investment Forum in Baku, underscoring that the country’s near-term growth model still rests on hydrocarbons even as it courts more renewable investment.
Azerbaijan keeps oil and gas at economy's core

That matters because Azerbaijan remains a material energy exporter at a time when global oil markets are still volatile and capital is rotating across energy assets. Brent-linked crude pricing and elevated U.S. yields are keeping the sector sensitive to macro shocks, while investors continue to prize producers with cash flow, dividends and export leverage.
Sentiment Indicators
Aliyev’s remarks land as oil prices stay elevated and energy equities remain in focus. U.S. crude was around $96.72 a barrel in the latest forecast, and the 10-year Treasury yield was about 5.32%, a backdrop that supports higher financing costs but also keeps commodity-linked assets attractive when inflation and geopolitical risk stay sticky.
The market tone reflects that tension. USO, the oil ETF, closed at $145.66 on Sept. 30, with its 50-day moving average at $136.84 and its 200-day moving average at $114.37, while RSI readings slipped to 37.9 after a strong run. XLE ended at $61.50, below its 50-day moving average of $61.67, and XOP closed at $179.33, also below its 50-day line, suggesting energy shares have cooled from earlier highs but remain well above longer-term averages.
For investors, the message is that Azerbaijan is not signaling a fast retreat from fossil fuels. That keeps the country’s fiscal and export outlook tied to oil and gas while leaving room for a slower-build renewable transition, a mix that can support state revenues and foreign investment but also leaves growth exposed to swings in crude, sanctions risk and regional instability.
Azerbaijan has been trying to attract more foreign capital into renewables and regional power links, but Aliyev’s comments reinforce that hydrocarbons remain the anchor. The next test is whether new investment forums translate into actual project financing and whether oil prices hold enough to sustain the country’s energy-led balance sheet.
