Armenia’s prosecutor general is asking an anti-corruption court to confiscate real estate and other assets from former labor and social affairs minister and current lawmaker Aghvan Vardanyan, in a case valued at about 235 million drams, or roughly $600,000. The move adds to pressure on the country’s asset-recovery drive and signals that the state is pressing ahead with civil forfeiture cases against politically exposed figures.
Armenia Seeks to Seize Assets From Aghvan Vardanyan
The anti-corruption court has accepted the lawsuit, which seeks three properties, income from one rental property, one vehicle, stakes in three legal entities, two bank deposits and the interest accrued on them. Prosecutors are also asking the court to recover 43.065 million drams as unexplained income and another 192.99 million drams that they say cannot be justified by lawful earnings.
Sentiment Indicators
The case matters beyond the individual defendant because confiscation proceedings are becoming a key tool in Armenia’s anti-corruption enforcement. For the government, successful asset recovery can boost public trust, strengthen budget revenues and deter illicit enrichment. For politicians and business owners, it raises the legal and financial risk of holding assets that prosecutors can tie to unexplained wealth.
The filing also keeps the spotlight on the judiciary’s role in high-profile corruption cases, where outcomes can shape perceptions of rule of law and enforcement consistency. If the court grants the request, it would reinforce a tougher posture toward asset recovery; if it does not, it could slow momentum behind similar claims.
